Half Lovely, Half Boring
My third day on the Camino
Rewind the tape seven weeks, back to my 3rd day on the Camino in the town of Vila do Conde in Portugal.
I imagined that the owl on the rooftop had watched over my sleep during the night. I rose early, was out of my hotel by 7:45 am, and entered a little coffee shop called McCaffe for breakfast. My lack of Portuguese and the owner’s lack of English resulted in a lot of pointing, incorrect words, weird half-words, and nodding, but in the end I got a fresh buttery croissant (which the resident dog never stopped looking at), a watermelon smoothie-ish drink, and espresso. I tried to eat slowly, watching a soccer game on the TV and observing other patrons come in and cheerily greet the owner, but after a half-hour my body was eager to get going and beat the intense rays of the sun.
